It seems that young people are not entering the skilled trades at a rate that will satisfy our growing commercial and industrial needs. Indeed, the shortage of skilled trades’ people is bordering crisis proportion. Where will we find tomorrow’s engineers, electricians, HVAC technicians and plumbers? Young people need to be encouraged to participate in our trades. We need to demonstrate to them that we are proud of who we are and what we do. We can’t just stand up and talk about it. We need to live it. We need to show our respect for others, and respect for ourselves in how we live our lives. Through example, we can illustrate to young people that our career path and vocation is a worthy one.

Upon his election to president of the National Association of Power Engineers (NAPE) at the assocation's first convention, Henry Cozen’s stated, “Let us engineers elevate ourselves and our standards: improve ourselves socially, morally and intellectually, and the day will come when the engineer will be recognized as one of the important factors in any industry. To this end, the united effort of this whole body should be bent.” The message of Mr. Cozen’s vision is as alive today as it was in 1882.
