to all who participated in this year’s Facility Decisions Conference and Expo. The response has been so outstanding that we will be bringing the show back to Las Vegas next year, September 22- 23. We hope you took advantage of all the conference sessions, the outstanding exhibitors and show floor fun, while still having plenty of time to enjoy some of the sights, restaurants or shopping experiences Las Vegas has to offer. I know I personally walked off the plane with a few extra dollars in my pocket!

2 Very Exciting New Sessions

We are constantly striving to bring top industry experts to our shows and this year we’ve done it again. We are very excited to announce two very qualified industry experts who are joining the Facility Decisions line up.

First up on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in room C we have Christian Hardigree, a leading expert in bed bugs litigation and Department Chair at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at UNLV, presenting the session “Bed Bugs! How a Facility Manager Can Avoid Liability”. This is a necessary session for anyone in the Medical, Education, or Hospitality industries. A recent Today Show segment about bed bugs on college campuses reported that these creepy crawlers are defiantly making a come back in the United States -- you need to be ready for them.

Secondly on Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. in room A, come hear Ron Runkles of the National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA) give a presentation about “Lighting Systems: The Path to Rapid ROI”. Rapid return on investment; isn’t that something every facility manager would love to see? NEMA’s enLIGHTen America Campaign is a high-quality resource for any FM dealing with these issues. This presentation will give attendees real-life examples to save energy and money with lighting systems, an easy and relatively inexpensive solution to fighting the energy crunch.

Remember, our pre-registration is only an on-site guide for you. Feel free to sit is on ANY of our sessions, even if you didn’t pre-register for that particular session. Also remember, seating is on a first come basis so arrive early to guarantee a seat in your preferred sessions.

Olympic Fever

I love the Olympics! I tend to forget how much I enjoy watching all the different events from the popular swimming and gymnastics, to the less popular sports of rowing or water polo.

As I watched the opening ceremony and the subsequent games I was impressed by what an amazing feat the producers pull off every four years. I can’t imagine all the people and resources that go into creating an event of that stature.

I just read an interesting article about the power sources need during the Olympics. Power supply company, Aggreko out of Scotland, is the supplier for the Beijing Olympics and is contracted to supply 140 megawatts of power across the 37 venues.

The preparations have taken years; in Beijing alone 12 new buildings and 8 temporary buildings have been built. The Olympic village, home to over 17,000 athletes, was just awarded LEED Gold Certification under the USGBC’s new pilot program, LEED for Neighborhood Development. This is the first international development to be awarded LEED status under this new program. Now after all the architects and builders have left, it will be up to the maintenance departments and facilities managers to keep these buildings up to highest performance level for the rest of the Olympics and many more years.

Command Authority

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a leader as “a person who has commanding authority or influence”. Whether you like it or not, you are a leader, either a leader in your department or a leader in your organization. The maintenance and facilities departments unquestionably have authority and influence over the organization, but maybe not as much as you would like or feel necessary. Some of our best speakers are in the trenches of maintenance and facility management everyday. They climbed the ladder in both corporate and educational organizations to become leaders in their field. Make sure you attend the general session “Rising through the Ranks: How to Achieve Leadership in Facilities Management” at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday September 16, in the exhibit hall.
