Energy efficiency planning and retrofitting are of course important aspects of "greening" facitlities, for schools or any other use. Please don't forget that blue is also green- water efficiency is an important part of any sutainability or "green building" project, and will become increasingly important as water costs increase and supplies decrease, which is a very real trend right now.
Saving water often leads to real savings in energy too, due to the fact that water heating is often a large part of domestic energy consumption.
Although LEED and other green certification programs currently give little attention to this important area, points for water efficiency are available and will be expanded in future versions of the standards. Beyond the points though, water efficiency upgrades and retrofits to existing buildings can have very quick paybacks, reaping financial benefits for years to come. An especially important point for cash-strapped schools.
Rebates and other incentives are often available for these improvements, and are sometimes without cost at all due to generous programs offered by water agencies.
