As I write this, it's 1:30 p.m. Do you know how secure your building is?

If the recent poll posted on FacilitiesNet is any indication, you don't. According to the poll, only 38 percent of the buildings managed by respondents have had a security audit conducted in the last three years.

That's a shockingly low number, especially when one considers how many high-profile security incidents there have been in the last few years.

Since the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 dead in April 2007, there have been at least six significant incidents in U.S. schools alone. A shooting in Dekalb, Ill. left six dead and 17 wounded in February. Beyond campus, the there is the ongoing threat of terrorism, to say nothing of corporate espionage or, in a souring economy, disgruntled employees.

If you're one of the users who hasn't done a security audit in three years, consider: How has your company changed in three years? How has ? Your company's business plan? And how have your buildings changed to meet those needs? Has your security plan kept pace? If you can't answer those questions with ease, it might be time for an audit.
