Facility management can be a thankless job. The facility executive is responsible for an enormous asset base and a significant operating budget. But in the eyes of too many top executives, FM never rises to a strategic level. Instead, when they think of facilities, senior managers think of utility bills, or a space that’s always too hot (or too cold), or the time a construction project was behind schedule, or the cost of those roof repairs.

In other words, top management often thinks of FM in terms of costs and problems, not opportunities and successes. Hardly a complete picture.

In reality, good FM can add significant value to an organization. That’s the reason Building Operating Management is launching FMXcellence.

FMXcellence is a national recognition program for FM departments. The editors of Building Operating Management will cull applications from facility executives
to find the best examples of ongoing practices or completed projects that have added value to an organization.

FMXcellence honorees will be featured in Building Operating Management and will be recognized at Building Operating Management’s NFMT Conference & Exposition, March 16–18, 2010. The winning FM department or departments will also receive a plaque in recognition of their accomplishments.

Although external honors are no substitute for internal recognition, FMXcellence will provide a tangible validation that the facility function can make a substantial contribution to an organization. Beyond offering a stamp of approval, it will provide examples of exactly what effective FM can accomplish — which is much more than it often gets credit for.
