Data Center Facilities Management

  • Comments 7
Hello all

I have worked in Data Centers for 30-years now. Small ones and big ones. I am currently working in my seventh (7). I have worked in Data Center Operations and Data Center Facilities Management. So I feel that I can safely say that I know a thing or two about Data Centers. I would like to hear from people that work in Data Centers or Computer Rooms in a Data Center Facilities Management capacity. People who do this work may have a variety of titles such as Data Center Facilities Managers, Coordinators, Infrastructure Support, Facilities, Technicians, Engineers, etc., etc. I have a website called Data Center Facilities Management and it's address is: www.datacenterfm.com. Check it out if you would like and tell me what you think (any criticism at all - positive or negative). There are so many unsung heroes out there with so many stories to tell (believe me I have quite a few myself). People that go to work every day and do the this type of work usually are invisible or transparent and get the work done behind the scenes. But it is important work. If a Data Center doesn't have adequate electrical power or cooling capacity the servers don't work or there isn't any growth and we all know the consequences of that. So this the first of what I hope is many, many more postings.

  • Hi John!

You might want to check out our free Webcast at 1:00 Eastern today, "How Green Data Centers Cut Costs and Raise Reliability." Bill Kosik of HP is presenting, and you can register at:

  • Hello John,

Just recently joined. Looking to share advice & resources in data center management. I work for a data center in Ireland, I hope we can share & talk about data center management.

Looking forward to hearing from you. I tried your website, but seems to be disabled. www.datacenterfm.com

  • Hello Garland,

  • My website is called 'Data Center Facilities Management' and the address for the website is:  www.datacenterfm.com. I apologize if the link in my blog did not work

  • I have edited my blog and re-published it. The link is correct now and it works properly.

  • Hi John,

I recently, joined the DC community as a coordinator with main responsibility to provide power and cooling for the 4 DCs from 4000 sf. to 12000 sf. There are a lot of cheep (fast) patch up jobs done before me and I can see the devastating consequences. I want to know a rule of thumb for some of most frequently used servers for power and cooling. For example: if glycol loop is 6" therefor it is in the range of 100T capacity.

  • Hi John, I just joined your site forum.  I have serviced data centers since the 1980's. I can provide Emerson and Liebert equipment just about anywhere in thew world. Generac Power backup and the like with sound engineering advice. Basically everything but the switches.

Those rules of thumb can bite you. I just reverse calculated 100 tons to pipe size and made four assumptions. I was comfortable at a long arm's length.

I sell web-based facilities management programs with full implementation and ongoing monitoring service. I am working on an IT specific module now. It will cover physical equipment, operating capacity, reserve, etc. right down to allowance for future IP addresses. I have all the scars to make it work.

Keep posting I like these topics.

    Bernie
