How do you handle "Crab Bucket Syndrome"?

As we are in the midst of a generation  exodus of the workforce and we need to prepare future workers to develop leadership skills, how do we give future generations the opportunities to rise above the ranks?

Why do I call this "Crab Bucket Syndrome"?

When you put 15 crabs into a bucket, after a while an industrious crab will scratch his way up the side of the bucket to escape. What is interesting at the moment when the crab is out about to reach the top another crab will reach up and knock him back into the bucket.

What can we do to provide internal growth programs and help more groom and prepare to take on more responsiblities and leadership as we are also dealing with more potential retirees who cannot leave the workforce as their 401k recently became 201ks.

  • Unfortunately we now have a workforce in search of instant gratification.  Young adults today are used to cell phones, instant messaging, high speed internet and everything at light-speed.  Few of them are willing to travel the roads to success that me and my generation did.  We learned, sometimes the hard way, that it took hard work and dedication to achieve success.  With my staff I try to keep them informed and trained using their favorite tool, the internet.  If you look you can locate training course and seminars, most of which is free or reasonably priced, to keep them interested and informed.  Many times their enthusiasm about new technologies will send them in search of ways to improve existing methods and procedures.  By showing a willingness to listen to their ideas and implementing any that prove to economically feasible and beneficial it makes them feel more part of the overall company team.  If they feel they are part of the bigger picture they seem more likely to stay especially if thay can be show a path to career advancement.  The key remains and always will be to lead by example.
