Figured some of you may enjoy a chuckle so posting a humorous incident while in Vegas for Facilities Decisions. Which was absolutely wonderful and delighted to learn that my session Fighting the Maintenance Crisis was the most attended session and got an unsolicited ovation by attendees. But that is not the funny/painful story see below:

Walked and walked and walked some more in Vegas on 3 almost healed broken toes. Not anymore. Dang hotels, conventions and the Stratosphere were so spread out probably walked 10 miles yesterday. By the time I got to the elevator for the Stratosphere restaurant, the security asked what is wrong, why are you limping? Then i said got 3 broken toes(didn't say from a propane tank while grilling over the summer) and Vegas is too dang spread out.

Then out of the blue- 2 drunk guys behind me, one said to other drunk "you know the moral of that story, huh?" The other drunk said "no". "

"Well. you don't break your toes" Then they snorted in drunk stuporous laughter,

Already tired, and in pain and not in any mood to put up with jerks laughing at my expense, I wheeled around my 280 pounds and looked at the drunk nose to nose and said "You know, you are right, And if Smart a---s kept their mouths shut, I would not have to kick their --- so hard to break my toes." Their rosey red drunk faces got pale real quick after I put the fear of Joel in them.

They did not say a word or look at me the entire ride up the elevator. Words can make the pain go away!

Anyway, toes will heal and hope to see you next year at NFMT or Facilities Decisions.

We all in the profession know that we are in the fight against a serious crisis- he Maintenance crisis. To save money in the short term companies worldwide have been deferring maintenance. Deferred maintenance costs have escalated to chronic levels where in some situations buildings, equipment and resources are beyond repair.

Despite the economy companies struggle to locate qualified skill maintenance technicians capable of caring for modern advanced technologies, and despite the increased enrollments in community colleges, industrial, welding, mechanical and electrical programs struggle to fill classes.

Yes, we are still in the midst of a serious Maintenance Crisis. This fall i am going to speak in New Delhi, Mumbai, Houston, Texas, Washington State and numerous other locations to learn and to share effective techniques to fight the maintenance crisis.

This is one site where FM leaders can really make a difference. Hope that you can pitch in?

I have been enjoying hanging out with a WWII Vet who got frost bite in the battle of the Bulge as the years go by those injuries of his youth continue to diminish his capacity. However, his memory is unbelievable and to drink beer with a true American hero of that generation is special.

Our current crop of heroes are coming back to a rude awakening, especially if they have been injured. We all need to reach out do something to help them. Either by helping them get a job, receive vocational training, commercialize their military resume, or help them find suitable living quarters.

We have a debt that all need to repay them and hope that you pitchin.

With all of these cutbacks is our nation at risk?
