This seems to be a growing concern in regards to Fire Door Inspections. We have received countless calls from Facility Managers and Engineers about who to contact to have Fire Doors Relabled because theirs are either missing or painted over. How big of an issue is this in your facility?
From a maintenance stand point labeling a door is for documentation on PM's and annual drop testing. It is best practice to ensure fire doors are inspected and maintained. defacing, drilling holes, and damaged fire doors are concerns that voids the fire raiting of the door. With that being said, unless your insurance carrier requires labeling it is not a violation of any code as long as "you" - the responsible site - have proof of testing and inspections and the location verified.
Actually, NFPA 80 2007 states specifically that fire doors and frames must be labeled. 6.3.1.1 States that only labeled door frames shall be used while 4.3.1 Only labeled fire doors shall be used. The IBC also refers back to NFPA 80.
My take would be that if your state has adopted NFPA 80 2007, and your doors are not labeled, then you are in violation of code.
I just took a CMS survey in the state of Wisconsin on a surgery center and and to have several doors recertified
because the labels had been removed that cost $1300 each.
If you have a surgery center that takes medicare that is part of the inspection process. thanks lifeSafety
