If you "catch" anyone making health claims, not only scratch it off the list, but also report it to the EPA or BBB at once. However, it is well known that dirty air ducts offer undisturbed shelter, numerous food sources and therefore, a near perfect breeding environment for fungi, bacteria and viruses. The services to watch out for are called blow-and-go in the trade. Contractors who provide them might not be licensed, probably are not members of any trade association and often spend less than an hour in your house. And often have high pressure sales tactics that can lead to bills many times the amount of the offered special.

Sales pitches for blow-and-go work often include sweeping but unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of duct cleaning, claims of EPA certification or approval (both bogus) and recommendations for annual duct cleaning, which is unnecessary, as part of your annual appliance service.

Worse yet, contractors using inadequate vacuum collection systems and short-cut cleaning procedures can cause more problems than they solve. According to the EPA, these substandard jobs can release more dust, dirt and other contaminants into the air than simply leaving the ducts alone. Cost and time estimates vary because of the different sizes of houses and complexities of duct systems. But the EPA says that a professional cleaning should cost from $450 to $1,000 and take four to eight hours in a typical three- or four-bedroom house.

Proper procedure, according to NADCA, is to place the system under negative pressure with a powerful vacuum and insert various brushes and cleaning apparatuses into the ducts to dislodge debris, which flows to the vacuum. NADCA guidelines allow both vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of the house, and inside-exhaust systems fitted with HEPA filters.

How To Select A Commercial Contractor

	Can the company show proof of NADCA membership and certification?

	How long has the contractor been in the residential HVAC system cleaning business?

	Can the contractor provide you with evidence of the current Worker’s Compensation and General Liability Insurance coverage? (Ask for Certificate of Insurance)

	Does the contractor posses the proper Licenses that are required by your city or state to perform the work they are proposing? (Not all cities or states require licenses - click here to check your state.)

	Can the contractor provide you with 3 to 5 customer references with phone numbers for projects of similar size and scope of work which they provided service in the last year?

	Does the contractor have written safety, respiratory, and confined space programs in addition to OSHA compliance reports?

	Will the contractor provide you with a means to conduct a visual inspection at any time during the cleaning? (Mirror and flashlight, camera or other remote visual systems)

	Will the contracting company actually do the work? (Some companies subcontract the work to independent contractors. You will want to apply these guidelines for subcontractors as well.)

	Will the company be assigning an Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) to your project that will be responsible for the complete project?

	If there is any remediation of mold or other biological contamination does the company have a Ventilation System Mold Remediator (VSMR) on staff.
